The Burgess Books of Bristol record the names of thousands of men (and occassionally women) admitted to the freedom of the city in an almost unbroken sequence from 1557 to 1995. For more information, please click here to see an article located elsewhere on this website.
These books effectively comprise 23 Volumes, although they are actually numbered from 1 to 21, with Volumes 1 and 3 each comprising of two parts.

The Bristol Record Office holds most of the crew lists for ships registered at the Port of Bristol for the years 1863 to 1913. The lists are organised by year followed by the official number of each ship.
The following information is included: Surname, Firstname(s), Age/Birthday, Birthplace, Rating, Ships name, Off number and Date. This index covers the years 1866, 1871, 1876, 1881 and 1886 (every 5th year). |

This index, entitled "They sailed out of the Mouth", reflecting the fact that many ships of this period were too large to navigate the River Avon into the City Docks and now sailed from the new docks at Avonmouth.

The Bristol Royal Infirmary was founded in 1737 and was one of the earliest major hospitals in the country. Admitting patients from Somerset, Gloucestershire and into Wales, unless they were suspected of suffering from venereal disease, fits, smallpox or infectious distemper, when they would be turned away. Records of admissions were kept from the very first day in 1737, in large ledger books, of both out-patients and in-patients. Entries were made across the full double page under the following headings: Patients Name; Age; Parish; Recommender; Admission Date; Distemper (ailment); Discharge Date; State (cured, transferred, died).
These records are still kept today, the early ones having been deposited with the Bristol Record Office.
The information contained in this index includes the patients surname, first name, age on admission, date of admission and parish or town of residence. |
