The Bristol Royal Infirmary was founded in 1737 and was one of the earliest major hospitals in the country. Admitting patients from Somerset, Gloucestershire and into Wales, unless they were suspected of suffering from venereal disease, fits, smallpox or infectious distemper, when they would be turned away. Records of admissions were kept from the very first day in 1737, in large ledger books, of both out-patients and in-patients. Entries were made across the full double page under the following headings: Patients Name; Age; Parish; Recommender; Admission Date; Distemper (ailment); Discharge Date; State (cured, transferred, died).
These records are still kept today, the early ones having been deposited with the Bristol Record Office.
The information contained in this index includes the patients surname, first name, age on admission, date of admission and parish or town of residence.
