Gloucestershire Burials Index
This index was produced by our Sodbury Vale Group as a contribution towards the National Burial Index (NBI), published by the Federation of Family History Societies. Our on-line version contains the additional information of the abode of the person at the time of their death, which is a great help in distinguishing between individuals of the same name, or in learning where a family was living.
The parishes and churches covered are generally within the Bristol diocese and are now in the local government area of South Gloucestershire. The time period is from 1813 until about 1866, when large municipal cemeteries became the norm in urban areas. As this was a period of considerable change, especially in the mining and industrial areas around Kingswood, some urban parishes were not established until after 1813.
Select the initial letter of the surname you want on the index bar to the left of this page. Note that some letters have been divided so that the list of surnames offered is more manageable.
The spelling of surnames can vary widely, and the spelling you use now may not be the same one that would have been chosen by the vicar burying a nineteenth-century ancestor. In some cases, where there are several alternative spellings and a large number of people listed, all variations of a surname have been sorted by first name. You may need to think of alternative spellings - for example, is Joseph UMPHRIS of Siston who was buried in 1831 at age 6 connected to Harriet HUMPHRIES who was buried there in 1866?
In some instances, alternative spellings of a surname have been brought together, and the page is then arranged by the first name rather than spelling of the surname. We hope you find this arrangement helpful.
As with all indexes and transcriptions, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the work, and you should try whenever possible to check the original register, which may contain additional information.
