Neil Dun's 'FreeBMD' Church Cross-reference for Marriages.

Neil Dun and Derek Allen have been analysing the data on the FreeBMD web site (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/).  Many members and visitors to our research room have already found this index to be a helpful aid in locating marriages at churches in Bristol and surrounding districts.  You can use this index to look up the FreeBMD reference for a marriage and there is a high probability that it will identify the church.  This can save you time and money if you live in the Bristol area (or maybe you can ask someone to do a 'look-up' for you) because you can then visit the Bristol records office and search for it up there.

To access the data, visit Neil's own website at www.bristolbmd.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

25/9/2008: The latest progress report from Neil is given below:

As the mainstream church marriage index has been done for the Bristol area up to 1912, we have expanded to the area covered.

Using internet resources we have been indexing marriages from other registration district.

Most notably these are the Somerset and Monmouth, as a few sites which I’m sure you are aware of have sprung up with very comprehensive data.

Neil's mum (Lesley Sutton) has also been busy working through the non conformists, recording each marriage and the associated GRO reference.  On the site there is now an index of nearly 1,500 non conformist marriages along with the chapel they occurred at.

Neil adds "As we (or rather my mother) get through all the chapels, people visiting the site will be quickly able to determine if the marriage they want is available at the BRO or not".
