Mailing Lists are ways of communicating with other family historians who share the same interests as yourself. They can be very effective in helping you find information about a particular locality or family, but many of the people who use them have only just begun their research and may expect a lot. They need to be used with care!

Mailing Lists are a way of sending queries and replies by e-mail to a group of subscribers.

Four RootsWeb mailing lists relevant to our area are:- Gloucestershire, Bristol & Somerset, Bristol & District and Hawkesbury. If you subscribe to these, you will receive a regular posting of queries, together with replies, form list members. You can choose to receive postings either as they appear (e.g. as GLOUCESTER-L), or as a regular digest (e.g.as GLOUCESTER-D).

There are over 22,000 RootsWeb mailing lists on different counties, areas and topics. They are listed at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/. You can also check for previous messages of any subject, by going to the archive of the messages sent to the RootsWeb mailing lists, which can be found at the same addresses.
