Bristol Register Office

Bristol Register Office (moved from 'Quakers Friars' in early 2006) is now located in Corn Street. Copies of Birth, Marriage and Death certificates can be obtained at Register Office, but their indexes are different from the national ones, so do not use the 'GRO' reference number. For church marriages, you need to know the name of the church. Some records were lost due to bombing during the Second World War.

The Register Office guarantee that certificates ordered and paid for by 12.00 midday will be ready by 3.30 pm the same day. If ordered and paid for after after 12.00 they are guaranteed to be ready for collection by 13.00 on the next working day. Certificates can be posted if you supply an SAE, otherwise a charge is made to cover costs - 50p (as at 18.3.10).

A separate form is required for each certificate.

Historical Registration Districts

Historically, Bristol was divided into three Registration Districts. These were Bristol, Bedminster and Clifton or Barton Regis. Clifton and Barton Regis were different names for the same district. This district was called Clifton from 1837 to 1875 and then became Barton Regis from 1875 to 1898. In 1899 onwards, all three districts came under the Registration district of Bristol.

Registration District of Bristol

The Registration District of Bristol was made up of the following sub-districts:

  • Castle Precincts
  • Saint Augustine
  • Saint James
  • Saint Mary Redcliffe
  • Saint Paul
  • Registration District of Clifton (1837 – 1875) and
  • Registration District of Barton Regis (1875 – 1898)

The Registration Districts of Clifton and Barton Regis were made up of the following sub-districts:

  • Ashley
  • Clifton
  • Saint George
  • Saint Philip and Saint Jacob
  • Stapleton
  • Westbury-on Trym

Destroyed Registers

Until the Second World War, Bristol Register Office was situated on what is now Castle Park. In November 1940 this area was destroyed by German bombers, and sadly many of our historical records of Births and Deaths were destroyed. Copies of items missing at Quakers Friars can still be obtained from the General Register Office.

Destroyed Marriage Registers

Although no marriage registers held at the Register Office were destroyed by bombing, many registers were held at Churches and Chapels around Bristol and where these churches were bombed, the registers were destroyed.
